Bandar Abbas, Hormuzgan prov, Dec 27, IRNA-Head of the Iranian Wrestling Federation Mohammad-Reza Yazdani-Khorram said on Wednesday that members of the US National Wrestling Team will not be fingerprinted upon their arrival in the country.
Talking to IRNA, he said the 14-strong US team is scheduled to attend the International Free Style Contests, Takhti Cup, to be held in this southern port city from January 18-19.
Referring to a bill passed by Majlis requiring fingerprinting of US nationals entering Iran, he said the consultative body has given full authority to the government in this respect.
According to a protocol approved during the 2006 World Freestyle Wrestling Championships in Guangzhou, China, the sports teams entering the US territory are not fingerprinted, Yazdani-Khorram said.
Therefore, he added, the US authorities have announced that the Iranian teams particularly the wrestlers will be provided with special visas that are usually issued to high-ranking officials and special authorities.
Since the government has been given full authority, the American wrestlers will not be fingerprinted upon their arrival in Tehran and then Bandar Abbas, the federation's head said.
In order to make up for their defeats from their Iranian rivals in the 2006 World Freestyle Wrestling Championships in Guangzhou, the US is to attend the Takhti Cup competitions with full squad, Yazdani-Khorram added.
The Iranian wrestlers beat four US rivals in the Guangzhou championships.
The US team is the first foreign team to accept the federation's invitation to attend the competitions, he said.
Wrestling teams from 14 countries including US, Russia, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Daghestan, Armenia, Poland, Mongolia, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, and Republic of Azerbaijan are scheduled to attend the contests to be held from January 18-19, Yazdani-Khorram further announced.
