Baghdad, Dec 29, IRNA-Two Iranian diplomats illegally detained by the US forces in Baghdad on December 21 were released on Friday morning and handed over to the Iranian officials in the presence of Iraq's National Security Advisor Mowaffeq al-Rubaie.
The two were arrested in the Iraqi capital in a clear example of violating international norms and regulations and regardless of their political immunity.
They were released thanked to the tireless efforts of the Iranian and Iraqi officials started immediately after the two were arrested.
Iran's Ambassador to Baghdad Hassan kazemi Qomi told IRNA on Friday in Baghdad that the arrest of the two diplomats was against all internationally accepted norms and regulations particularly the Geneva Convention.
Appreciating Iraqi officials' efforts for the release of the two diplomats, the ambassador stressed satisfactorily that all attempts which have been made so for to damage Tehran-Baghdad friendly relations were failed by the two sides' vigilance.
Noting that it was the third case of illegally detaining Iranian diplomats in Iraq, the ambassador said "Fortunately with the effort exerted by the Iraqi officials, the US forces who firstly denied their arrest were obliged to admit it and under pressure from the Iraqi government to release them."
The handover took place in the presence of al-Rubaie.
