IAEA's vote against Iran: A dark day for the international community

TEHRAN, Feb. 4 (Mehr News Agency) -- The vote by the International Atomic Energy Agency Board of Governors approving the European Union resolution to send Iran's nuclear dossier to the UN Security Council marks a dark day in the history of the West and the international community.

In fact, this unjust resolution benefits the expansionist policies of the United States and some EU countries, since it is the coup de grace ending the role of international organizations in resolving global crises.

Over the past week, the world has witnessed discussions on Iran's peaceful nuclear activities, a tense meeting of the IAEA Board, and pressure exerted on various countries by major powers.

The 35-nation IAEA Board held a series of meetings during the week in order to find a solution to the Iranian nuclear crisis, which led to a dispute between the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) on one side and the EU trio (Britain, France, and Germany) and the United States on the other.

The U.S. and the EU, as two powerful global poles, made efforts to send Iran's nuclear dossier to the UN Security Council, without regard for the nation's legitimate right to gain access to nuclear technology meant for peaceful purposes.

This decision, which was only meant to increase the political pressure on Iran, was made without considering the consequences.

Over the past three years of its sincere cooperation with the IAEA and the international community, the Islamic Republic of Iran has always observed the regulations of the IAEA Charter and has opened its nuclear installations to over 1400 man-hours IAEA inspections, without a single report of deviation in its nuclear program.

Legally speaking, Iran has signed the additional protocol to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), although parliament has not ratified it, and, in a goodwill gesture, also voluntarily suspended its uranium enrichment activities.

From the technical standpoint, the IAEA should have no doubts about the peaceful nature of Iran's nuclear activities.

Meanwhile, in line with the moves of the IAEA, the EU trio and the U.S. have made strenuous efforts to politicize Iran's nuclear dossier and have used the UN Security Council as a sword of Damocles to intimidate the Iranian nation.

Although the EU3 and the U.S. finally succeeded in getting a resolution against Iran approved through political negotiations and by appeasing some members of the IAEA Board, reporting Iran to the UN will definitely serve to further consolidate Iranian national cohesion vis-a-vis the United States.

Now, the Iranian nation and government, in a joint effort in line with national interests, will be obliged to resume uranium enrichment activities because it has become quite obvious that continued commitment to rules that trample upon the rights of nations would only result in capitulation to the bullying demands of foreign powers. And Iran will never bow to imperialists.
