Tehran, Jan 3, IRNA-A morning economic daily was ordered to suspend publication on Monday, its editor-in-chief, Iraj Jamshidi, said. Talking to IRNA, Jamshidi said that the `Asia' economic daily was ordered by the Press Monitoring Bureau to desist from further publication until it was otherwise informed.
He said the daily was not notified beforehand but that the director-general of the Domestic Press and News Agency Affairs in the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance, which has direct supervision over press publications, had approved the decision.
The Asia economic newspaper first came into circulation in 2001 with a record 135,000 copies published.
Since then it has been suspended from publication four times.
Its chief editor, Jamshidi, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison and slapped a one-year ban on press activities for acts inimical to the Islamic system by giving interviews to foreign radio stations, taking measures contrary to public interest and publishing articles against national security.
