Brussels, Jan 7, IRNA-The European Commission announced Saturday afternoon that test results from the EU laboratory in the UK has confirmed that the avian influenza virus, which has recently caused an outbreak in poultry in eastern Turkey, is a high pathogenic type H5N1.
In accordance with the information provided by the Turkish authorities and confirmed yesterday by a WHO-collaborating laboratory in the UK, some human cases of disease were also caused by an avian influenza virus, noted a Commission statement.
Three children from the Eastern Turkish town of Dogubeyazit have died this week, at least two of them from H5N1 strain.
In order to clarify the epidemiological situation, laboratory tests are still being carried out in the EU and WHO-collaborating laboratories and further investigations are being carried out by the international expert team.
The statement reiterated that the complete ban on any import from Turkey of live birds and poultry products adopted in early October 2005 remains in place.
