Celebs express their views on Iranian cinema

TEHRAN, Jan. 21 (Mehr News Agency) -- Iranian directors, filmmakers, actors, and actresses expressed their expectations for the new year of Iranian cinema at the opening ceremony of the 24th Fajr International Film Festival in Tehran on January 19, the Iranian Students News Agency (ISNA) reported on Saturday.

After the new year announcement, several people entered the stage carrying trays with the traditional Haft Sin displays of Noruz (Iranian New Year) and Crystal Simorghs, the most prestigious Iranian cinematic award, and performing stick dances. They then placed the trays in a mock-up of Persepolis.

Iranian actress and director Golab Adineh, composer Majid Entezami, and director Khosro Sinaii were also honored during the event.

Deputy Culture Minister for Cinematic Affairs Mohammadreza Jafari Jelveh expressed hope that Iranian cinema would one day respond to Iranians' attention and respect for the art form.

Actor and producer Alireza Shoja Nuri said he hoped that Iranian movie theaters would be renovated.

A film of prerecorded messages of Iranian directors and actors for the new year of Iranian cinema was also screened. Following are some of their remarks:

Ebrahim Hatamikia: "I hope to depict the personality of Martyr Mostafa Chamran."

Fereidun Jeirani: "I hope that Iranian cinema will be in a good state and will be accepted by everyone as a modern art."

Alireza Davudnejad: "I hope that filmmaker Seifollah Dad returns to commercial activities."

Jamal Shurjeh: "I want to depict the Islamic Revolution's causes."

Rasul Mollaqolipur: "I desire to be able to revive part of my childhood in a film."

Fereidun Hassanpur: "I hope that people's wishes will be fulfilled very soon."

Mohsen Amiryusefi: "I hope that the chasm between commercial and cultural cinema will be bridged and that our young artists can sign contracts with professional filmmakers."

Jamshid Mashayekhi: "I wish to play the role of Hafez."

Niki Karimi: "I had hoped to make a feature-length movie, which was fulfilled."

Farhad Aiish: "I hope to perform until the end of my life."

Golshifteh Farahani: "I hope art stays alive."

Mohammadreza Forutan: "I hope we will be able to behave more humane before winning an award."

Habib Rezaii: "I wish to play all roles which I have not played yet."

Alireza Khamseh: "I wish to play the role of the Fool in a movie based on William Shakespeare's 'King Lear'."

Reza Kianian: "I will be delighted if I'm invited with my family to these events."

Bahram Radan: "I wish to play the role of Lotf-Ali Khan, a grand nephew of Karim Khan, the first ruler of the Zand dynasty (1750-79)."

Other Iranian directors including Kianush Ayyari, Rasul Sadramoli, Sirus Alvand, and Mohammad-Ali Sajjadi also expressed their views.

Davud Rashidi, Jahangir Almasi, Taraneh Alidusti, Amin Tarokh, Reza Babak, and Roya Nonahali were the other actors and actresses who expressed their wishes for the New Year.

The opening ceremony was managed by Manuchehr Mohammadi, directed by Bijan Mirbaqeri, and hosted by Jaleh Sadeqian.
