Islamabad. Jan 24, IRNA-Following is the text of Pakistan-Iran joint statement issued on Tuesday at the conclusion of two-day gas pipeline talks in Islamabad.
The fifth meeting of the Iran-Pakistan Working Group on Iran-Pakistan-India (IPI) Gas Pipeline Project was held in Islamabad on 23rd-24th January 2006. The Iranian delegation was led by Nejad- Hosseinian, Deputy Petroleum Minister of Iran, while the Pakistani delegation was led by Ahmad Waqar, Secretary Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Resources.
The Iranian delegation called on H.E. Amanullah Khan Jadoon, Minister of Petroleum & Natural Resources, who conveyed the firm support of the government of Pakistan to the Iran-Pakistan-India Pipeline Project, and urged the two delegations to pursue their discussions in a constructive manner and according to the time frame set in the MOU of July 2005 to ensure commencement of the project by 2007.
The visiting delegation also called on Mir Muhammad Naseer Mengal, Minister of State for Petroleum & Natural Resources.
The discussions between the two delegations were held in an atmosphere of cordiality and mutual understanding. Both sides reaffirmed to address the various issues pertaining to the project to maintain the momentum of the dialogue process.
The deliberations focused on all important technical, financial and commercial issues related to the IPI project.
Both sides noted with satisfaction that negotiations at bilateral working group level between Pakistan and Iran provided a mechanism to make progress o all related aspects of the projects so that substantive and concrete progress could be achieved.
Discussions were held on the following points:
Principles of gas pricing mechanism,
Feasibility study, and
Gas sales & purchase agreement.
Both sides agreed that a bilateral joint working group meeting will be held in Tehran in month of March which will be followed by tripartite meetings at joint working group level.
Both sides also agreed to hold trilateral ministerial meeting in April, 2006 in Tehran.
