TEHRAN, July 1 (Mehr News Agency) - Iran stormed into the world goalball quarterfinals in Spartanburg in South Carolina, the United States, Saturday.
The Iranian team was beaten 13-8 at first clash by the 2002 world champion Sweden, but it overcame the 2003 world champion Spain and the 2003 world's fourth-placed side South Korea 7-6 and 10-3 respectively.
Although Iran lost to the 2004 Athens Paralympics champion U.S. 9-7 and to Slovenia 10-8, it advanced to the quarters with an 8-4 victory over Australia and a 10-9 win over Japan.
Iran, the United States, Sweden, and Slovenia from Group B celebrated their promotion to the quarters and Lithuania, Canada, Denmark, and Germany from Group A also advanced.
According to the schedule, Iran plays Lithuania later in the day.
The world meet started on June 26 and runs until July 3.
The top six qualify for the 2008 Paralympic Games in the Chinese capital Beijing.
