TEHRAN, July 1 (Mehr News Agency) - Tehran Mayor Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf said on Saturday that the municipality is prepared to construct 20 kilometers of new metro lines a year if given the required budget.
Speaking in the opening ceremony of two new metro stations, Qalibaf said that extending the underground railway system is one of the most important ways to ease Tehran's heavy traffic.
"Today we have the necessary technical capability to launch 100 kilometers of metro lines in Tehran over the next 5 years and to double its current capacity, of course if the financial problems are resolved," he noted.
Qalibaf further expressed regret over inadequate subsidies allocated to the public transport system.
