TEHRAN, July 9 (Mehr News Agency) -- The First International Occupation Cartoon Festival will be held in Tehran during Sacred Defense Week (September 22-28).
The 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war is called the Sacred Defense in Iran and Sacred Defense Week is the annual commemoration of the martyrs and the sacrifices made during the war.
Festival secretary Seyyed Masud Shojaei told irancartoon.com that the event would be focusing on the occupation of Khorramshahr during the Iran-Iraq war and the occupation of Palestine.
Pointing to the recent Israeli attacks in Gaza, he said that cartoons act as an international language which can depict the suppression of the Palestinian, Iraqi, and Afghan nations.
Iranian cartoonists Mohammad-Hossein Nirumand, Javad Alizadeh, and Seyyed Masud Shojaei and foreign cartoonists Raed Khalil of Syria and Carlos Latuff of Brazil are the jury members, who will begin judging the works on August 16.
Special tributes to artists Hossein Khosrojerdi and Javad Alizadeh and the publication of books of war cartoons are some of the other programs of Iran's House of Cartoon during Sacred Defense Week.
Works should be submitted to the secretariat of the festival before August 11, Shojaei said, adding, "291 works from 28 countries have been submitted to the secretariat so far."
The festival is being cosponsored by Iran's House of Cartoon, the Foundation for the Preservation and Publication of Sacred Defense Works and Values, and the Visual Arts Office of the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance.
