Pollution threatens Caspian Sea

TEHRAN, July 25 (Mehr News Agency) – The exploitation of oil resources, the use of undersea pipelines and the increasing number of the bulk carriers along with the other pollutants jeopardize the Caspian Sea ecosystem, said the director general of Mazandaran and Golestan Provinces' Ports and Shipping Department General on Tuesday.

"Iran's Ports and Shipping Organization (PSO) operates as a member of some international conventions on sea pollution control to take necessary measures in the event of unexpected sea pollution," added Seyyed Nabi Seidpur.

The department general conducts two sea maneuvers every year to enhance readiness for controlling sea pollution, he added.

The main objectives of the maneuvers are evaluating the organization's crisis management potentials, assessing readiness of the operating teams as well as efficiency of the pertinent equipment and human resources, he noted.

The strategic position of the Caspian Sea, its economic values and tourist attractions necessitate its protection and sustainability, he concluded.
