Iranian women to hold rally on June 12 in Tehran to demand equal rights

A coalition of Iranian women is planning to hold a peaceful rally in Tehran on June 12 to protest the anti-women laws. According to the announcement on Zanestan web site (see Persian text), in the last 100 years since the constitutional revolution Iranian women have been trying to gain equal rights. However, their basic rights have been generally ignored in both civil and criminal laws. Also, the following demands by the coalition in the last year's rally have gone unanswered:

  • Abolition of polygamy
  • The right of divorce by women (currently only men have such a right)
  • Joint custody of children
  • Equal rights in marriage
  • Increasing minimum legal age for girls to 18
  • Equal rights for women as witnesses

So far over 400 women and men from all facets of life (intellectuals, journalists, artists, etc.) have joined the call. Among the signatories are the renowned poet Simin Behbahani and human rights activist lawyer Mehranghiz Kar.

The group is planning to gather in Tir square in Tehran at 5pm on Monday June 12 (Khordad 12 1385).
