Paris, June 7, IRNA-US has not given positive response to the Iranian people's demand for resumption of flights between Tehran and New York and vice versa, Managing Director of Iran Air, national flag carrier, Saeed Hessami said on Wednesday.
Hessami, who is on a visit to Paris to attend a two-day meeting of International Air Transport Association (IATA), said that Iranians living in the United States and Canada are interested in using their national aircraft for their trips and it is their legitimate right, but, the US has so far made objection to resumption of flights between New York and Tehran.
He said that Iran and the United States have an agreement to that effect, but, unfortunately, Iranian flights to the US have been cancelled unilaterally.
Hessami said that many American and European airlines have violated Iran Air's right and of course they suffered losses, on the other hand, the sanctions imposed by US and its European partners on Iran have enabled them to make huge profits annually.
He said that Iran Air used to operate flights to Paris every day and 30 flights to London a week, but, currently they do not allow Iran to operate the same number of flights to London and Paris.
He deplored US action in imposing sanctions on purchase of passenger aircraft from the European countries and said that Washington violated Chicago Convention on Safety of International Navigation of Civil Aircraft by refusing to sell aircraft to Iran to replace ageing civilian fleet of aircraft.
"In 1999, the Iranian and French presidents agreed on sale of 12 passenger aircraft to Iran, but, the supplier unilaterally repealed the contract on the ground of the US sanctions on Iran. The supplier paid back the dlrs 41 million advance payment for the contract.
It is in violation of the Chicago Convention on Safety of International Navigation of Civil Aircraft," Hessami complained.
