Khatami dismisses US anti-Iran accusation on Iraq interference

Tehran, March 27, IRNA-Former president Mohammad Khatami said in Manama on Monday that US anti-Iran scenario on interference in Iraqi affairs is unfounded and that the occupation forces are responsible for providing Iraqi people with security.

Khatami, who is currently in Bahrain to take part in a conference sponsored by Sheikh Ibrahim Cultural Center, said that Washington fabricated the allegations about Iranian interference in Iraq in an attempt to create animosity between Iran and its neighboring Arab governments.

The former president of Iran said that Iran's acceptance of the US offer to hold talks on Iraqi affairs does not mean that Iran admitted the US accusation of interference in Iraq.

"Iran accepted the US offer for talks on Iraq, because Iraqi leaders asked Iran to do so," he said.

Asked about US reaction to Iranian nuclear program, Khatami said that the US has no fear of Iranian nuclear program and knows well that it is for civilian use, but, Washington's strategy is to obstruct economic development of Iran.

"Iran does not need nuclear arms and only plans to produce fuel for nuclear power plants. My government fully cooperated with the European Troika and International Atomic Energy Agency, but, the US is insisting on animosity with the Iranian nation," Khatami said.
