Quake toll in Iran's Lorestan Province rises to 66

Khorramabad, March 31, IRNA-Overnight quakes in the western province of Lorestan have thus far killed 66 people and injured 988 others.

Chancellor of Lorestan University of Medical Sciences Dr. Qodratollah Shams Khorramabadi told IRNA here on Friday that 45 of the victims were in Borujerd and 21 in Dorud.

Dr. Khorramabadi said that 900 of the injured were in Borujerd and the rest in Dorud.

He said the rescue operations were still going on in the quake- stricken regions.

The killer quakes, ranging between 4.7 to 6 degrees on the Richter scale, have also inflicted heavy damage on provincial cities of Dorud and Borujerd with all the villages in Dasht Silakhor, a region between the quake-stricken cities of Dorud and Borujerd, and the epicenter of the quakes, suffering between 30 to 100 percent damage.

Ambulances, blankets, food, heaters and medicine have been cited as the most urgently needed items.

Based on a related report, two relatively strong earthquakes caused panic in the cities of Arak and Shazand in Markazi province between late Thursday and early Friday.

The quakes occurred at 23:15 (07:45 GMT) and 04:50 (01:20 GMT).

The epicenter of the second quake with a magnitude of six degrees on the Richter scale was registered in Chalanchovan in Doroud city of Lorestan province.

The quakes left no damage or casualties in Markazi province, announced Markazi Natural Disaster Headquarters on Friday.
