Iran's parliament bans smoking in gov't buildings, public places

Tehran, May 11, IRNA-The Iranian parliament (Majlis) on Wednesday approved a motion banning smoking in public places and vehicles as well as government buildings.

Over the past couple of days, MPs approved 12 articles of the 20-article motion in different sessions in line with the government's comprehensive national anti-smoking plan.

Pursuant to the ban, tobacco products will no longer be sold to young adults less than 18 years old or be sold by them.

Violators will face confiscation of this product and a fine of 100,000-500,000 rials (ca USD 11-55).

Additionally, repeated violators will be meted a fine of not less than 10 million rials (ca USD 1,100).
