Rice: No Security Guarantees for Iran

By VOA News

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice says the United States has not been asked to provide security guarantees to Iran to help resolve the crisis over its nuclear program.

Rice spoke Sunday on Fox News. Media reports last week said European negotiators wanted the U.S. to offer such guarantees while they tried to persuade Iran to abandon sensitive nuclear work.

The United States maintains it wants to solve the matter diplomatically, but has refused to rule out possible military action if necessary.

Rice spoke hours after Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi repeated that his country would not stop uranium enrichment despite the planned European offer of incentives.

Britain, France and Germany are finalizing an incentive package for Iran, reported to include a light water-nuclear power plant, in hopes of persuading it to abandon uranium enrichment work.

The United States and other Western powers suspect Iran is enriching uranium to make nuclear weapons - a charge Tehran denies.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP and Reuters.
