FM: Iran happy with formation of Iraq's permanent government

Baghdad, May 26, IRNA-Visiting Foreign Minister of Iran Manouchehr Mottaki met with his Iraqi counterpart Hushyar Zebari here Friday expressing Tehran's satisfaction over formation of a permanent government in Iraq.

Mottaki arrived in Iraq on a two-day visit Friday morning heading a high-ranking political delegation to discuss major bilateral and regional issues with senior Iraqi officials.

His visit is taking place while it is shorter than a week that Iraq's new government took office earlier this month.

This is the second visit to Iraq by a senior Iranian official during the post-Saddam Hussein's era.

Speaking after meeting with Zebari, Mottaki told IRNA that Iran was determined to promote its bilateral ties with Iraq.

He expressed Tehran's support for Iraq's sovereignty and solidarity and said Iran was ready to help Iraq's reconstruction, specially rebuilding of its holy sites which were destroyed during the years of Iraq's occupation by the US-led forces.

The visiting minister also said that inauguration of Iran's consulate in the Iraqi city of Basra would be another highlight of his visit to Baghdad.

Mottaki hoped that the mission would help Iran and Iraq promote their ties in the future.

He added that the necessity of Tehran-Baghdad cooperation in border areas, and in the fields of fighting drugs and arms smuggling as well as fighting terrorism, were among other major topics discussed by the tow foreign ministers.

According to Mottaki providing electricity for Iraq by Iran as well as freedom of a number of Iranians who are in the Iraqi prisons were other issues also reviewed by the two sides.

Meanwhile, Zebari assured Mottaki during the meeting that Iraq would never cause any harm to Iran's interests or be source of any problem for the country.

He said that Baghdad supported the idea for contribution of Iranian companies and small businesses into Iraq trade.

Turning to the issue of Iran's nuclear problem, Zebari said "Iraq is in favor of finding a peaceful and transparent solution for the problem."

He added that Baghdad took Tehran's security as its own security and believed that "as a leading state in the region, Iran's nuclear problem will definitely be solved peacefully."
