TEHRAN, Nov. 1 (Mehr News Agency) - Operation of freight and passenger rail wagons will be transferred to private sector by yearend (Iranian year ending March 20, 2007), the Persian service of ISNA reported on Wednesday.
"Over 4,000 railway cars have so far been sold to the sector and equal numbers are operating under lease-to-own contracts," managing director of Iran Southeast Railroad noted, adding the private firms are now running over 90% of service operations.
Moreover, 60% of maintenance and supply work is being run by private companies and the rest is conducted by engineering and technical businesses. "Construction and installation ventures are nevertheless carried out by private sector," Mohammad Mehdi Dehqan continued.
Setting up general policies, planning, control and follow-ups in Iran's railroad sector are still being directed by the government.
