The organizers of Cineuropa 2006 said that they presented the award to Qobadi for "his personal and professional merit".

British composer Stephen Warbeck also received a Cineuropa award for his soundtracks on the second day of the festival on Friday.

Santiago de Compostela's Teatro Principal, Salon Teatro, Sala Yago, CGAC, Fundacion Caixa Galicia, and Aula Sociocultural Caixa Galicia are scheduled to screen more than 100 films during the festival, which runs until November 30.

Qobadi's latest film "Half Moon" shared the Golden Shell for Best Film with French entry "My Son" directed by Martial Fougeron at the 54th San Sebastian International Film Festival in Spain last September.

Co-produced by Iran, Iraq, Austria, and France, "Half Moon" was selected to represent Iraq in the category of Best Foreign Language Film at the 79th Annual Academy Awards in 2007.

Qobadi was also honored with a special mention for his documentary "Daf" at the International Southern Documentary Film Festival and Market in Spain last October.
