TEHRAN, Nov. 7 (Mehr News Agency) - An official with the Ministry of Agricultural Jihad forecasts that around 250 tons of pistachios will be produced in Iran in the current Iranian year (ends March 20, 2007).
During the first six months of the current Iranian calendar year some 55,300 tons of pistachios at an estimated value of $357 million, has been exported, Behruz Gheibi told MNA on Tuesday.
This is indicative of a growth of around 47 percent in terms of weight and 95 percent increase in terms of value of the exportable pistachios in comparison with the similar period last year, he announced.
He also referred to the HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) plan currently implemented in a number of the pistachio producing provinces of the country, and explained that presently the scheme is being conducted by different specialized working groups and in cooperation with various related organizations based in the provinces.
According to the official, the scheme is one of the programs to promote the quality of the Iranian pistachios.
Iran's annual pistachio production stands at around 220,000 to 250,000 tons, however due to unfavorable weather, last year's yield dropped to 150,000 tons.
