Tehran's traffic problem will become a nightmare if not addressed: police chief

TEHRAN, Nov. 8 (Mehr News Agency) -- If the issue of traffic is not addressed in time, it will become a disaster in the near future, National Police Chief Brigadier General Esmaeil Ahmadi-Moqaddam said here on Wednesday.

The lack of an integrated management system for the development of roads, inefficient and outdated emergency units, weak laws, and insufficient police equipment are some of the reasons behind the increase in traffic jams, especially in large cities, Ahmadi-Moqaddam told a regional conference on traffic management attended by President Mahmud Ahmadinejad.

The safety problems of the jalopies on the road and citizens' disregard of how to use cars are causing skyrocketing expenses due to the extravagant use of fuel and the appalling increase of accidents and casualties, he added.

The number of vehicles has grown extensively and will double to about 30 million in the next ten years, he noted.

"Of course, we should avoid a proportionate increase in fatalities and traffic congestion," the police chief warned with regard to the prevalent condition.
