Effat Roozbeh - Positively A Great Lady Who Paints

By Syma Sayyah, Tehran

Those who are interested in art and what is shown in Tehran galleries usually have a week to see the exhibitions of different artists around town.  Some galleries display the works for 10 days.  Weekly ones have the advantage that one knows every Friday or Saturday, as it may be, the gallery has a new show and you can just drop in for the viewings.

One such place which I visited recently (not so well known) is one of my favorite galleries in Tehran.  The Banafsheh Gallery (50 Bahar St. South Shiraz, Mollasadra Ave., Tel. 88 03 42 47) is run by Elahe Raees-Dana who herself is an adorable lady artist.  This week the works of Mrs. Effat Roozbeh (Niamir) and her students were exhibited.

I was amazed so much with this petite lady whose mind and heart are as large as anyone you can find anywhere.  This 81 year old lady, who has been painting for over fifty years, lost her husband at the young age of 30, has three sons and is a true fighter.

She was living in Yazd before she lost the father of her children and moved to Tehran to get a job so as to be able to take care of her family.  She had been a head mistress as well as a teacher, teaching painting to high school students in Yazd.  In Tehran, she found a job at the Ministry of Health and a secondary job at the Nurses Association.  She had to hold two jobs to make ends meet.  She has done this most successfully as I met her eldest son, who is a neurosurgeon with his family and I also learnt that one of Effat's other sons  is a highly acclaimed accountant and third one is an engineer.

This lovely lady does yoga and enjoys the poetry of Hafez.  When I asked her what is her favorite color she said  "all colors, I love all colors".  She told me that she considers herself very lucky and fortunate.  Someone so positive and full of life and hope is a rare and valuable thing in Tehran.   So, when I asked her to give our readers a message she said to me:  "treasure your moments and live well because life is beautiful".

You may see more of her work on her website at:  www.effat-roozbeh.com which I could not get through due to slow speed connection very recently at my end, but I had it checked from UK and it works.

It is meeting people like Effat among other things that makes doing what I do so very much enjoyable and wonderful.  Here I have a few pictures for you from this exhibition.
