Tehran denounces assault on Iranian student at UCLA

TEHRAN, Nov. 18 (Mehr News Agency) – Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad-Ali Hosseini has condemned the Tuesday attack by UCLA university police on an Iranian student in the United States.

In a statement issued here on Saturday, he said that the physical attack has “hurt the feelings of the Iranian nation”.

The United States has a long history of racism as well as violating the rights of its religious minorities and immigrants, he pointed out.

“The U.S. police’s increasingly discriminatory attitude toward immigrants is an explicit violation of human rights.”

He underlined the necessity of punishing the culprits and providing satisfaction to the student.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran is seriously pursuing the case and will spare no effort in defending the dignity and rights of its nationals,” he stressed.

A UCLA student of Iranian descent, Mostafa Tabatabainejad, 23, was Tasered by the campus police after refusing to show his ID card.

He is planning a federal civil rights lawsuit.
