Prominent Union Leader Arrested In Iran

November 20, 2006, RFE/RL -- Prominent union leader Mansur Osanlu was reportedly arrested in Tehran on November 19 by plainclothes security agents.

Osanlu, who is the president of the Syndicate of Workers of the Tehran Bus Company, had been released on bail in August.

The reason for his arrest and the charges against him are not clear.

Osanlu had reportedly helped organize demonstrations against bus drivers' work conditions.

Rights groups and trade unions condemned his arrest and said that he was detained because of his peaceful activities and opinions.
