Isfahan, Oct 3, IRNA-Officials of Royan Research Center in this central city have picked a name from a list of suggested names for Iran's first cloned lamb that was born in the center Saturday morning.
The sheep is called `Royana', after the center where she was born in this ancient city, said a statement sent to IRNA by the center on Tuesday.
Royana is Iran's second cloned lamb.
The first died five minutes after it was born in the center last August.
According to the statement, the lamb was given a scientific name -- `Royan-SHA-C2.'
The statement, quoting Dr Gourabi, one of the center's officials, said that the lamb's scientific name was taken from name of the center where Royana was born while SH stands for the first two letters of the cloned specie -- sheep. The third letter A stands for the sheep's race -- Afshari. The letter C indicates the lamb has been cloned and the number 2 indicates that it is the second cloned sheep born in the country.
After being delivered through Caesarean, Royana was not initially in good condition. However, it recovered after a while thanks to the efforts of the center's medical team.
Cloning is an advanced technology only possessed by developed countries.
Obtaining the technology by the Iranian specialists would enable them to use it in different fields of medical treatment.
A combination of the cloning methods and the new progress made by Iranian physicians in the treatment of spinal injuries would enable them to increase the possibility of curing those suffering from spinal injuries, another official of the center earlier told IRNA.
