Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) are to meet in Tehran this year, Nov. 21-23, to discuss "Good Urban Governance."
Tehran, 5 October 2006 (CHN) -- Following a proposal by the government of Iran and its approval at the 114th meeting of the Council of Permanent Representatives (CRP), the regional conference of Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) capitals and metropolises mayors, entitled Good Urban Governance will be held for the first time in Tehran from 21-23 of November 2006. Tehran's Municipality will host this conference which will be held under the title of "Good Urban Governance".
According to the announcement of the Organization, the upcoming conference will be the first meeting in this field, during which the mayors of capital and big cities of ECO member countries will discuss and coordinate cooperation between ECO Capitals and Metropolises on relevant issues including urban poverty reduction, controlling and managing urban construction and development, urban transportation management, solid waste management, environmental pollution control, etc.
The capabilities of Member States' capitals and metropolises municipalities for possible cooperation with other ECO member states and extending their experience with other countries in the future will be examined during this three-day meeting in Tehran through training courses, seminars and workshops.
Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) is an intergovernmental regional organization established in 1985 by Iran, Pakistan and Turkey aiming to promote economic, technical and cultural cooperation among its member states. ECO is the successor organization of Regional Cooperation for Development (RCD) which remained in existence since 1964 up to 1979. Later the Organization was expanded and countries such as Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan joined the Organization.
