About Noorsaaz :
NoorSaaz is an exciting ensemble based in New York
City. These accomplished musicians are experienced in performing music from many
areas of the world. Monika Jalili, singer and founder, created the ensemble to
perform the music of pre-revolution Iran. The word, "NoorSaaz", in Persian, is a
combination of "Noor" meaning "light" and "Saaz" meaning both "creator" and
"musical instrument." The group uses various instruments to create Persian music
with a western approach.
Monika Jalili's sincere and touching interpretations,
combined with her pure voice, have moved audiences across the globe. She has
been praised by Americans and Iranians alike:
"I feel that your voice
penetrates to the soul. " -Parvaneh (Shiraz)
"I was fascinated by your
beautiful and crystal clear voice. It is the voice of a nightingale."-Neda,
(Tehran)
"You were singing a folk Persian song more beautifully than the
original one"--Rasoul (Tehran)
The
musicians have appeared at venues such as the Cathedral of St. John the Divine,
Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, the Lotus World Music Festival, Art Institute of
Chicago, Rockefeller Center, Symphony Space, Trinity Church Wall Street, UC
Davis, Museum of Arts and Sciences (Daytona Beach), Satalla, St. Patrick's
Cathedral, Lincoln Center, Wortham Center (Houston), University of Washington
(Kane Hall), University of Illinois, Javits Center, Shubert Theatre (New Haven),
and the San Francisco Jazz Festival. They have also performed in Europe, Dubai,
Russia, Asia and the Ukraine. They have performed for and been interviewed on
BBC Radio, KIRN (Iranian Radio), Radio France Internationale, CFMB (Montreal),
CHIN (Ottawa), CKCU (Ottawa), Iranian Television, NPR, WFMU, PBS, NBC, Bravo,
and IFC.
They
have performed with such people as Aref (Iranian pop singer), Alim Qasimov
(Azerbaijani Mugham singer), the Naghmeh Ensemble (a London-based Iranian
Classical Ensemble), Frank London (Klezmatics), Allen Ginsburg, Steve Allen,
Smokey Hormel (Beck, Tom Waits), John Mellencamp, and Yehudi Menuhin.
Monika Jalili:
NoorSaaz is proud to have the creative contribution of the great music producer
Jamshied Sharifi.
Using
traditional and non-traditional instruments, as well as lyrics in Persian,
English and French, the artists of NoorSaaz combine their influences to present
original interpretations of this music. In this spirit of exploration, NoorSaaz
aspires to create understanding through an appreciation of the beauty of Iranian
culture.
