Iran's private sector allowed to import wheat

TEHRAN, Oct. 15 (Mehr News Agency) - The government has allowed the private sector to import wheat at the market prices. The measure is aimed at encouraging exports of the wheat products as well as fulfilling domestic needs.

Over 40,000 tons of wheat has been imported by the private sector in the current year (Iranian year started March 20, 2006), an official with the Commerce Ministry told the MNA here Sunday.

The official referred to the issue of attaining self-sufficiency in wheat and said that wheat importation is not contradictory to nation's self-sufficiency in the commodity. "We have a surplus production in wheat in the current year and we are even ready to export the product," he commented.

He also maintained that the ideal situation is when the private sector imports wheat and after processing it into downstream products - such as biscuits, pastries, chocolates and the like - exports them.

The government has so far in the current year purchased some 11,300,000 tons of wheat valued at around Rls.27,000 billion from about 1.5 million domestic wheat growers, he said adding that the figure is indicative of about 4.8 percent increase compared with the last year.
