Poets to compete for Simorgh at Fajr International Poetry Festival in Tehran

TEHRAN, Oct. 18 (Mehr News Agency) -- Tehran will play host to the first Fajr International Poetry Festival in January 2007. The Poetry and Music High Council of the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance ratified the plan on October 16.

Iranian and foreign poets and authors will compete for the Simorgh, Iran's most prestigious artistic award, in odes, quatrains, blank verse, translation of Persian poetry into other languages, Sacred Defense (1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war), Ashura (Muharram 10, the day Imam Hussein {AS} was martyred), and children's poetry sections.

The council has also agreed to consider establishing a separate section for Muslim nations at the 22nd Fajr Music Festival, which is scheduled to be held from December 31 to January 8 in Tehran.

The festival already consists of youth, local, women, and international sections.
