Iran's Agriculture jihad minister survives Majlis impeachment

Tehran, Oct 22, IRNA-Agriculture Jihad Minister Mohammad-Reza Eskandari Sunday received parliament's vote of confidence, in an impeachment motion brought up for mismanagement in his office.

The impeachment motion which was filed with the Majlis Presiding Board on October 11 was previously endorsed by 51 MPs but 28 MPs withdrew their names from the list afterwards.

The impeachment motion was rejected by 98 votes in favor and 149 against. Some 247 MPs took part in the voting.

Following the vote of confidence, Eskandari will remain in the cabinet in the post of agriculture jihad minister.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad arrived in Majlis scene this morning to defend the eligibility and performance of his agriculture jihad minister.

The motion cited unfulfilled plans of Eskandari announced on the day he received his vote of confidence, inability to secure food supplies, insufficiency in production of strategic goods, lack of attention to hiring of experienced managers and expulsion of experienced ones as among the reasons for seeking the minister's impeachment.

Ignoring knowhow as a basic development criterion, failure to improve productivity of factors of production, failure to create job opportunities, lack of attention to the need to promoted agricultural infrastructure, weak performance of intermediate and small-scale enterprises, massive fruit importations and not paying attention to his responsibilities to Majlis were among other reasons cited in the impeachment motion filed against the agriculture minister.
