Mashhad, Oct 28, IRNA-The Second International Saffron Symposium began its work here on Saturday in the presence of 112 Iranian and foreign experts. The first symposium had been held in Spain three years ago.
More than 80 percent of the world saffron is produced in Iran, the secretary of the second international saffron symposium Alireza Kouchaki said in the inauguration ceremony, adding that the product is very old in this country and is collected and packed publicly, economically, and culturally.
Kouchaki said that the product causes cordial relations among the people and is of high significance from economic and cultural points of view.
He said Iran currently possesses the highest rate of saffron production, adding that Iran enjoys the biggest share of land development in saffron cultivation and the land under cultivation has been doubled during the past ten years and the production rate fluctuates between 112 to 230 tons annually.
"With an export rate of 200 tons of saffron we can saturate the world market", Kouchaki said, adding that in this situation saffron development and production is not the first priority, but subjects such as quality control, creativity in use, reaping, packing and pharmaceutical usage in research are of the highest significance.
Kouchaki named Iran a leading country in production and trade of saffron and expressed hope that the country would become the main center of research for the saffron experts and scientists.
Saffron production and its technology, biology and bio technology of the pharmaceutical aspects, marketing, economy and innovation are the main topics in the said symposium.
Website launched concurrent with Saffron International Symposium
