The Sixth Mahallat Flower Festival will be held from 7-11 of September 2006 in city of Mahalat.
Tehran, 3 September 2006 (CHN) -- The sixth flower festival will start its work in city of Mahallat with cooperation of domestic and foreign companies. Some other joy festivals will be also held on the sideline of the festival on the occasion of the birth of the 12th Shiite Imam.
"This festival will start its work from 7th of September and will run to 11th of September in city of Mahallat. Meanwhile, the Cultural Heritage and Tourism Department of Mahallat will also organize some joy festivals during the 8th and 9th of September from 17-21 pm for amusement of tourists," said Behzad Moradi, director of public relation department of the Cultural Heritage and Tourism Department of Mahalat.
According to Ghasem Kazemi, cultural deputy of the Cultural Heritage and Tourism Department of Mahallat, last years the flower festival was highly welcomed by tourists and was visited by a large number of people. "Considering the participation of flower companies from the Netherlands and Korea, we are hoping this year's festival attract more tourists," added Kazemi.
Historical city of Mahallat is located in the Markazi province of Iran with 50,000 populations. In ancient times it was an important location for Zoroastrianism. The city is famous for its hot springs and flowers. It is located close to the mountains so it enjoys a mountainous weather. Enjoying a high potential for attracting tourists, including warm springs in 15 kilometers distance of the city, Mahallat is one of the most popular areas in Markazi province, which attracts a large number of tourists every year.
In addition to be a major center for producing flower, the surrounded area of Mahallat is rich with different stone deposits especially marble and travertine, which are refined into tiles in nearby factories and use for buildings.
The city is one of the major producers and exporters of flowers in Iran. Flower breeding in Mahallat goes back to some 85 years ago and it is known as pioneer of flower producing industry in the country. Every year some two million vases of flowers and 20 million bunch of flowers are produced in a 900 hectare area in Mahallat and is exported both inside and outside the country. Every September the city holds a flower festival.
Altogether, Iran is one of the world's largest producers of ornamental flowers. However, due to poor marketing and lack of an outdated packaging system, the country has lost its share in international flora trade. Experts believe that enjoying a unique climatic diversity, the country has a great potential for exporting flower.
