Madrid, Sept 7, IRNA-Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Larijani said in Madrid on Thursday that he is to confer with the European Union (EU) Foreign Policy chief Javier Solana within the next two days in one of the European states.
Larijani made the remarks while leaving his hotel in Madrid on Thursday.
The meeting between the two officials which was scheduled to be held in Vienna on Wednesday was postponed.
Iran's envoy to the International Atomic Energy Agency Ali Asghar Soltaniyeh told IRNA on Wednesday that the visit between Larijani and Solana would be held within coming days in Vienna.
The Group 5+1 includes five permanent members of the UN Security Council -- China, Russia, Britain, France and the United States -- plus Germany.
In a meeting with Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, in presence of Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos, Iran's top nuclear negotiator briefed the audience on Iran's nuclear program and the latest developments in he Middle East.
Larijani expressed the hope that his upcoming meeting with the European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana would help resolve the outstanding issues about the nuclear program.
He welcomed the "positive and constructive role" by the EU, particularly that of Spain, for establishment of stability and tranquility in the Mideast region.
For his part, the Spanish premier underlined the need for settlement of Iran's nuclear issue through diplomatic channels and negotiations and called for Tehran-Madrid consultations on the issue.
Meanwhile, Iran's Ambassador to Madrid, Davoud Salehi, who was also present in the meeting told IRNA that the atmosphere of talks was very friendly.
Larijani arrived here this morning to discuss the Iran nuclear issue with senior Spanish officials.
Larijani's visit to Madrid coincides with a visit by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, who is also due to meet Zapatero and Moratinos on Thursday for talks on Iran's nuclear case and the UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, but no arrangement has been made for Larijani-Annan meeting there.
Larijani's arrival in the Spanish capital comes a day after a scheduled meeting with Solana in Vienna Wednesday to discuss the nuclear standoff was cancelled. The two are still to meet but a new date has not been set.
Larijani's visit to Madrid is his second to Spain in the past two months.
