TEHRAN, Sept. 23 (Mehr News Agency) - Iranian experts have succeeded in the biological fight against two important honeybee diseases caused by the mites Varroa and Acarapis.
Producing an Acid Formic Gel, Iranian researchers at a domestic pharmaceutical company have made it possible to fight the two prevalent and deadly honeybee diseases caused by the mite Varroa and Acarapis, the Persian service of IRNA said on Saturday.
Iran's Veterinary Organization has issued the license for the mass production of the medicine and the gel will be available for use at the field as of the beginning of the fall, the report added.
In addition to creating resistance to treatment in the body of the host, most of the medicines used in the field affect the quality of the produced honey but, the new drug rules out the disadvantages.
The honeybee mites Varroa jacobsoni and tracheal, Acarapis woodi (Rennie), can be found on adult bees, on the brood, and in hive debris. In heavy infestations, pupae may not develop into adult bees. The adults that do emerge may have shortened abdomens, misshapen wings, and deformed legs and may weigh less than healthy bees.
