FM calls for UNSC's immediate action to release Iranian diplomats held by American troops in Iraq

Tehran, April 9, IRNA - Iran's Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki called on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to adopt immediate measure to make US troops release Iranian diplomats abducted in Iraq.

According to Foreign Ministry Media Department report, Mottaki in a message to UNSC asked that the UN body avoid any double standard behaviors in this respect.

"Considering repeated demands from Iranian and Iraqi governments for the freedom of five Iranian diplomats, they are still in custody of foreign forces in Iraq," he said in the message.

"Unfortunately, UNSC has not paid attention to the demands for examining the violation of international laws and principles ruling the diplomatic and consular affairs."

Pointing to the double standard stance of the UNSC, which is dictated by a number of member states with special interests in this respect, he added that such acts lack the support of world public opinion and many of the member states of the UN.

Mottaki expressed hope that the UNSC would pay due attention to this diplomatic problem and try to solve the issue soon.

Five Iranian diplomats were abducted in the US illegal attack on Iran's consulate general in Erbil, Iraq on January 11. International efforts to release these diplomats have so far born no fruit.
