Azerbaijan Expels Iranian Dissident To Tehran

April 13, 2007 (RFE/RL) -- Azerbaijan has expelled an Iranian dissident, raising fears that he will face persecution in Iran because of his political activities, RFE/RL's Azerbaijani Service reported.

Hadi Seyed Javad Musavi, a member of a nationalist Azeri group inside Iran, the National Awakening Movement of Southern Azerbaijan, was flown to Tehran on April 12.

His lawyer, Alufset Aliyev, told RFE/RL that the decision to expel Musavi violated international conventions.

"We consider this action by the government to be ignorance toward Azerbaijan's commitment to internationally recognized immigration laws, this will bring no fame to the Azeri government," Aliyev said.

Azerbaijan's Interior Ministry has said that Musavi was expelled because he was residing in the country without a visa.

Musavi was reportedly arrested in Iran in 2004 after participating in a protest. After fleeing to Baku in January 2006, he requested asylum from the UN office there, but his request was rejected.

Iranian officials have yet to comment on the case.
