Profile: Fred V. Abadi, Director of Public Works in San Francisco

Fred V. Abadi, Ph.D. as the new Public Works Director after a national search (see report).

Fred V. Abadi, Ph.D. has more than 20 years of experience in public works administration. Most recently, he was the Deputy Director of Public Works in Minneapolis and before that was the Director of Milwaukee County Public Works’ Transportation Division. As Deputy Director of Public Works in Minneapolis, Dr. Abadi was directly responsible for traffic and parking services, street maintenance, sanitary and storm sewer programs, and construction management. Dr. Abadi was responsible for review and approval of PS&E (plans, specification and estimates) for large improvement projects and represented the department at the City Council’s Transportation and Public Works committees. Dr. Abadi also represented the department in negotiations with other municipalities, county and state agencies. Dr. Abadi directed the effort to update the department’s five-year budget and business plans and recently reorganized the city’s Traffic and Parking divisions.

Working for Milwaukee County Department of Public Works, Dr. Abadi was responsible for highway, bridge, traffic and construction management projects. He developed funding mechanisms necessary to carry out the functions of the Transportation Division and negotiated with municipalities and state agencies for cost sharing and operating/maintenance agreements.

Dr. Abadi has extensive experience working with business and community groups. He also holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Civil Engineering (Transportation and Public Works Administration) and a Master of Science in Civil Engineering from Marquette University.
