Envoy denies US claim on discovery of Iranian weapons in Kandahar

Kabul, April 19, IRNA - Iranian Ambassador to Kabul Mohammad-Reza Bahrami denied the US claim on discovery of some Iranian made weapons and ammunition in Kandahar province to the south of Afghanistan.

The Iranian diplomat said that there is no document to prove such a claim, adding that it is just an imagination.

Bahrami said, "The motive behind such a claim is not yet clear to us." Turning to the highly favorable relations between the two states, he said that the officials of both sides are willing to further expand mutual ties.

He noted that Iran's policy is based on promotion of security, peace and stability in Afghanistan as well as support for its government.

"Over the past five years, Iran has allocated more than 250 million dollars worth of non-return relief aid to the country's reconstruction in various sectors and implementation of different projects.

"Exchange of visits between Iranian and Afghan officials continue and more than 40 memoranda of understanding have been inked mutually over the past five years," he added.

The Iranian diplomat said that the 930-km common border between the two countries is called the border of peace and friendship, adding that drugs is the only issue from which both sides are suffering.

"Iran's stance on the issue is quite clear and our policy is based on support for Afghanistan's government-elect.

"Therefore, we dismiss the US claim and hope that the move does not aim to deviate the public opinion from the failures of various countries in their campaigns against terrorism and drugs in this country," he added.
