Vienna, April 24, IRNA - An Austrian expert said on Tuesday that Iran is trustworthy gas supplier to the European Union countries. Lecturer at Vienna University Karin Kneissl made the remarks in an exclusive interview with IRNA.
He said that according to consultations of the EU states with various countries including Algeria, Libya and Iran, the Islamic Republic is the better option in this respect.
Kneissl also said that the landmark agreement with Tehran on oil and gas development project was reached in light of the longstanding economic cooperation between Iran and Austria.
Based on the agreement, which National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) and Austrian National Oil and Gas Company (OMV) inked on Saturday, Iran will export more than two million tons of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) via Austria to the European states.
Kneissl, who is also an energy expert, added that negotiations are underway among Turkey, the other European countries involved in the gas transfer to fund the project, but they have not yet finalized a deal.
He said that signing gas agreement between Iran and Austria at present was a tactical measure from Tehran, because, Iran could have signed such a deal a couple of years ago or before the United Nations Security Council's resolution against the Islamic Republic. "So, the current agreement was a calculated step from Iranians."
Turning to the EU dependence on import of gas from Russia, he noted that based on gas transfer negotiations, the EU planned to expand cooperation with Iran, Turkmenistan and Eastern European countries on gas supply.
