20th Tehran International Book Fair opens May 1st

TEHRAN, April 30 (Mehr News Agency) -- President Mahmud Ahmadinejad is to inaugurate the 20th Tehran International Book Fair tomorrow. Several publishers, writers, and scientific and cultural celebrities are expected to participate in the opening ceremony.

During this ceremony the best Iranian publishers selected from the previous year will be awarded.

In a press conference held here on Monday, official organizers said that the number of publishers participating in the fair is higher than in previous years.

Participant Mehdi Jahromi, the director of the House of Writers, said that authors can purchase books using the special coupons that the house has provided.

In addition, the House of Writers has asked publishers to cooperate with the house and give discounts to writers.

The Deputy Director of Iranian publishers, Majid Hamidzadeh, noted that the number of participating publishers has this year increased in all four categories of books - general, children's, academic, and educational.

Director of the Book Fair, Mohsen Parviz, stated that 30b rials worth of book coupons will be distributed among visitors.

Recent rain and thunderstorms have created several problems for the fair organizers.

It seems that more time was needed than anticipated to prepare Tehran's Imam Khomeini Mosalla for hosting the book fair, and this has created problems for participating publishers.
