Food industries play major role in Iran's water pollution: World Bank

Tehran, July 31, IRNA - The latest report by World Bank reveals that food and drink industries are the top polluters of Iranian water resources.

The report on pollution in the world waters which was published under the title of 'The indices of world development', has evaluated the role of food and drink industries on polluting Iranian waters at 43.8 percent.

Based on the report, industries for production of basic metals with 17.2 percent and textile manufacturing industries with 12.5 percent stand at the next stages after food and drink industries for Iran's water pollution.

The report has evaluated the role of chemical industries in polluting Iran's waters as 10.8 percent, paper and pulp 7.1 percent, wood industries 0.8 percent, stone and ceramic and glass industries 0.6 percent and other industries as 7.2 percent.

Word Banks added that the daily level of organic pollution of Iran's waters in 1990 was equal to 102,689 kg, that has increased to 141,982 kg per day in 2003.
