Switzerland seeks role in Iran's atomic issue - Larijani

Bern, Feb 13, IRNA - Iran's Secretary of Supreme National Security Council said in Bern Wednesday Switzerland has presented no plan for Iran's nuclear program, but this country seeks to play a greater role in Iran's atomic program. Ali Larijani made the comment after a meeting with Swiss President Micheline Calmy-Rey in an interview with IRNA and IRIB' Central News Bureau.

Focusing on objectives of vesting Switzerland, Larijani said, "Ever since decades ago Tehran and Bern have had fruitful rounds of consultations on various issues, including international and regional matters, as well as our country's nuclear program, and we too, in this visit held talks with Swiss officials on the latter issue." Larijani added, "As a neural country, Switzerland wishes to play a catalyzing role in this regard and in this meeting, too, the two sides held satisfactory talks and in most cases we were agreed with one another."

The SNSC Secretary added that a couple of matters remained still open for further negotiations with Swiss officials.

He said, "Under the prevailing special conditions Switzerland wishes to play a role and to talk to the other sides, and we evaluate this role as positive since Bern intends to bring closer the involved sides' viewpoints to one another."

On contents of his talks with the Swiss President, Larijani said, "The moves, and agreements so far reached on our country's nuclear program and the unsolved remaining issues were reviewed during the meeting, and the possible solutions, too, were presented by the two sides."

Larijani added, "The Swiss President presented her country's viewpoints and those of the other involved sides and it was agreed that based on our negotiations, that were fruitful over some cases, the Swiss officials would keep on pursuing their efforts." The SNSC Secretary was asked whether Switzerland had any particular proposal regarding solving the existing difference of opinion over our country's nuclear program.

He replied, "Switzerland has ever since past played a positive role as a neutral country in our nuclear issue, but certain media's claim that Bern has presented us a proposal is baseless, and there is nothing particular that I am informed about."
