Role of Music in Iran's Traditional Sports to be Revisited

Iran's national Olympic and Paralympics Academy will organize the first professional festival on sport and music in Iran during this summer.

Tehran, 13 February 2007 (CHN) -- In an attempt to study the scientific, cultural and artistic aspects of music in promoting sport, Iran's Olympic and Paralympics Academy is determined to hold a professional festival with the title of Sport and Music for the first time in Iran. The festival will be attended by experts, artists, and athletes in Tehran and is organized on the occasion of Olympic Week, 25-27 of June 2007.

Several music competitions will be held during the upcoming event. Holding some ceremonies to commemorate artists active in sport music will be another program of the festival.

On the sideline of the festival, a series of seminars will be held in which history of music in Iran's sport, the role of rhythm and technical music in the sports of Iran and other countries as well as its impact in improving sport in these countries and analyzing the technical aspects of such music will be discussed by experts.

Varzesh-e Pahlavani, also known as heroic sport in Iran, is a good example where a combination of music and sport practices can be seen. In Varzesh-e Pahlavani, the practitioners follow the music played by the Master (Morshed) inside Zoorkhaneh (traditional gymnasium) which is accompanied with rhythmic music. Morshed is the person who chants and plays the drum while guiding the group practitioners.
