Tehran, Feb 19, IRNA - Chairman of the Expediency Council Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani on Monday criticized the Russian partner for the delay in completion of Bushehr power plant.
The agreement to build Bushehr power plant was signed with Russia in 1990s when Rafsanjani was the president.
In a meeting with head of Russian Federation's upper house of parliament Commission on International Affairs Mikhail Margelov, Rafsanjani deplored the fact that the trans-regional powers are using their influence with international organizations to ignore Iranian legitimate rights as stipulated in Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and Iran expects friendly states to stop such hegemonic actions.
Rafsanjani said that US attempt to build a unipolar world is doomed to failure.
He said that Iran-Russia common interest consistent with the regional issues plays effective role for developing bilateral cooperation.
"The US thought that the world will become unipolar following the collapse of the former Soviet Union (in 1990), but, the Muslim World, the Russian Federation, China, Europe, India and the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) emerged as effective in policy making on international affairs," Rafsanjani said.
Rafsanjani hoped that President Vladimir Putin's anti-US hegemony statement in the Berlin Security Summit would herald a new approach from the Russian Federation to deal with the US interventionism.
"The Islamic Republic of Iran believes that the regional states are capable of administering a security system for tranquility in the region," Rafsanjani said.
Margelov said, for his part, that Iran has a unique status in the region and atmosphere of cooperation prevails over Iran-Russia relations.
Iran is Russia's trade partner, he said, calling for enhancing level of parliamentary relations to keep up with the political relations.
Margelov said that the Russian Federation respects Iranian rights enshrined by the NPT and believes that the dispute on Iranian nuclear program should be resolved through negotiations and understanding.
Responding to a question by IRNA concerning Russian officials' statement on possible delay in completion of Bushehr Power Plant, Saeedi said on Monday evening, "Our payments have been made so far upon agreements and according to the agreed schedule."
Saeedi added different phases of installation of equipment are being implemented very well and the Russian contractor company is doing its utmost to complete the power plant in September 2007.
He said,"In order to to solve part of financial problems which are basically related to the Russian company and not the Iranian side, we will present a solution to them in coming days."
The Russian 'Atomstroiexport' Company declared Monday the timetable for completion of the Bushehr Power Plant may change due to delays in Iranians' last payment.
