TEHRAN, Feb. 20 (Mehr News Agency) - The 86-memebr Assembly of Experts held its first meeting on Tuesday for the new term. The Assembly of Experts members who are tasked with electing and supervising the Leader are elected for eight years.

Ayatollah Ali Meshkini told the inaugural meeting that the "Iranian nation will never give up its absolute and legitimate right to nuclear technology."

"In the views of nation's experts using nuclear technology for peaceful purposes is a legal right. God has created all these things for all humans on the earth and improper use of these gifts is forbidden for all."

"God willing, the Iranian nation will resist any invader" by maintaining unity and having faith in God.

"The Assembly of Experts believe in resistance against the oppressors and is seriously against terrorism and those who claim to be advocators of human rights," Meshkini noted.

Duties of the Assembly of Experts

Ayatollah Meshkini, who held the chairmanship of the third Assembly of Experts, said still many people are not aware of the duties of the assembly.

He said all assembly members who are elected directly by people should be Mujtahed (learned clerics who are sources of religious emulation)

All the assembly's ratifications are legally enforceable, he added.

"When the news of the death of Imam Khomeini was broken the Assembly of Experts did its greatest and most important job very well in the shortest time," the ayatollah opined.

Ayatollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic, passed away on June 4, 1989 and immediately the Assembly of Experts elected Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as the Leader of the Islamic Revolution immediately on the same day.

He stated as more time passes the correct choice on that day becomes more vivid.

Shia-Sunni unity

The cleric warned about plots to sow schism between Shias and Sunnis saying maintaining unity is the most important task of every Muslim.

"Undoubtedly, the enemy can reach its goal by pitting Shia and Sunni against each other."

He also said the ulema should be very vigilant in the face of such evil conspiracies.
