French and German nationals jailed in Iran for illegal entry are pardoned by Khamenei

Tehran, Feb 26, IRNA - A spokesman of the French embassy in Tehran confirmed Monday morning that a French national, who was sentenced to 18 months in jail for illegal entry into the country's territorial waters, was released Sunday.

The unnamed spokesman told IRNA that Stephane Lherbier was pardoned by Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The diplomat added that Lherbier is now in the French embassy in Tehran.

Lherbier's release was initially disclosed by French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy to reporters in Paris on Sunday.

The French skipper was arrested on November 29, 2005 and sentenced to 18 months in prison along with his German passenger, Donald Klein, for illegally entering Iranian territorial waters somewhere near Abu Mussa Island.

Douste-Blazy hoped Klein would also be released within the coming days.
