More than one hundred thousand anti-war protesters took part in demonstrations on Saturday 24-02-07 in London and Glasgow calling for British troops to be withdrawn from Iraq and warned the UK government against attacking Iran. The protesters also demonstrated against the replacement of the Trident nuclear missile system which would violate the Non Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

Among the activists and military families who took to the streets were politicians and entertainers. At the rally in Trafalgar Square, Ken Livingston the Mayor of London, Tony Benn the veteran anti-war leader, George Galloway (MP) and Jeremy Corbyn (MP) were among many who spoke passionately against the US-UK policies of war and occupation in the Middle East and warned against an imminent attack on Iran. Comedian Mark Thomas and playwright David Edgar also spoke at the rally.

Campaign Iran's participation included tens of Iranians and non-Iranians who marched under the banner of Campaign Iran with Do Not Attack Iran placards. Nearly 20,000 Campaign Iran cards were distributed. Ms Roudabeh Shafie spoke on behalf of Campaign Iran, stating in particular that Iranians inside and outside Iran oppose sanctions and any military attack on Iran.

The Stop the War coalition, which organised the event, along with CND and the British Muslim Initiative, estimated that around 100,000 participated in London. CASMII surveyors recorded three hours long flow of the demonstrators entering Park Lane from Marble Arch and estimated 85,000 marchers in London.

BBC 1 Television News, on Saturday night, reported 10,000 demonstrators in London and Glasgow calling for British troops to be withdrawn from Iraq as well as against the replacement of the Trident nuclear missile system. But the BBC news bulletin failed to say that one of the three main slogans of the demonstration was Do Not Attack Iran.

The Observer interviewed Lindsey German, Convener of the Stop the War Coalition, who said: 'We know that many people are coming to the view that the government is addicted to war.' She added: 'They are planning to renew Trident and Tony Blair is helping George Bush with his star wars project.'
