Rasht, Gilan prov, Jan 3, IRNA-The historical Persian Gulf Atlas has been drawn up and published based on European documents.
The representative of authors of the newly published Persian Gulf Atlas, Mahmoud Taleqani, who executed the project, told IRNA here Wednesday that it has been arranged by referring to historical documents belonging to the period between 16th and mid-18th centuries.
"The project was implemented jointly by Tehran University and Paris-based Sorbonne University in joint cooperation with the Foreign Ministry Center for Diplomatic Documents and History. It started in 2002," he said.
Taleqani noted that the atlas was drawn up and arranged by a scientific committee whose members were from French, Portuguese, British, German and American universities.
"The atlas was published recently in Belgium by one of the most reputable European publishers. The 330-page Persian Gulf Atlas is in color.
"It has been published on glossy paper in three languages, namely English, French and Persian," he said.
He said that this is a fully scientific atlas, adding that according to European documents (historical maps) show that the Persian Gulf has always been `Persian Gulf'.
"The first international historical cartographic Persian Gulf conference was held at Tehran University in 2004. It was attended by Iranian and foreign researchers and experts.
"Besides, at a meeting to be held on February 15, 2007, the published atlas will be analyzed by Iranian and foreign researchers.
The meeting will be hosted by Tehran and Sorbonne universities," he added.
Professor Taleqani said that Persian Gulf Atlas will be used as a source material and reference.
Taleqani is currently in charge of executing a project on Gilan rural heritage museum to be constructed at the forest park of Saravan area near the provincial capital of Rasht, which will be implemented in cooperation with French universities.
Taleqani, born in 1945, has a PhD in sociology and is an associate professor at Tehran University.
He has been teaching at Tehran University for the past 30 years and Iran's social, economic and cultural atlas is one of his most important works. Six books on sociological subjects have so far been published by him.
