Iran, China review mutual ties, regional security

Beijing, Jan 4, IRNA-Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Larijani conferred in Beijing on Thursday with the senior member of China State Council Tang Jiaxuan on issues of mutual interests.

At the meeting, Larijani highlighted the significant role played in China in regional and international developments and underlined the high respect of the Islamic Republic of Iran for that country.

Referring to the current level of ties between the two countries in various domains, the Iranian envoy said Iran and China enjoy deep rooted historical and cultural ties which have brought the two nations closer.

Iran and China are two noble and civilized nations in Asia, he pointed out.

On Iran's peaceful nuclear activities, Larijani underlined that the country's nuclear activities is of peaceful nature.

Iran adheres to Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) additional protocol, he said adding that the country underlines that benefiting from technological know-how is among its legitimate rights.

He called for expansion of mutual cooperation between Iran and China to urge regional and international cooperation and expressed the hope that to witness more cooperation between the two sides.

The Chinese official, on his part, underlined that Iran's peaceful nuclear dossier should be resolved through diplomatic means and constructive negotiations.

Reviewing regional and international developments, the two sides referred to the issues in Iraq, Palestine, Afghanistan and Lebanon and underlined that adopting of unilateral policy will not help restore regional and global stability.

Unilateralism of some big powers can endanger security of energy in the region, underlined both sides.

The two sides also discussed and exchanged views on the security of energy in the Persian Gulf region.

Given the recent visit of the Iranian president to China, Larijani expressed the hope that bilateral relations will further broaden in all fields.

The two sides also discussed expansion of mutual relations along with Iran's peaceful nuclear standoff.

Larijani is in Beijing to deliver a message from President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to his Chinese counterpart Hu Jintao.

He was welcomed at Beijing airport by Iranian Ambassador to China Javad Mansouri and a number of Chinese officials.

While in Beijing, Larijani is to hold talks with senior Chinese officials major bilateral and international issues including Iran's nuclear issue and Tehran-Beijing cooperation in various fields.

The SNSC's secretary also visited China on January 26, 2006.
